Acquiring backlinks is one of the more necessary lawyer seo strategies but this definitely doesn’t mean which you really should acquire website links at any price. Acquiring backlinks could be very expensive in terms of time and money. You will find numerous costly getting backlinks blunders and here are some of the best common:
Verify if backlinks have a “nofollow” attribute
Website link exchanges are still one of the ways to develop backlinks but unfortunately, there are numerous unethical website owners, who will taken advantage of you. One of the scams is when you pay somebody for a inbound link, it suddenly disappears or has the “nofollow” attribute. Which is why you really should check from time to time if the link is still there and if it doesn’t have the “nofollow” attribute.
Getting good quality hyperlinks but with useless anchor texts
It is terrific when PR of the webpage you are getting links from is high but when the anchor text is “Click the link!” or something like that, such a website link is barely useful. Key phrases in the anchor text are vital, so if the in-pointing link doesn’t have them, it isn’t a worthwhile one. Analyzing the anchor texts of hyperlinks takes time but the In-pointing link Anchor-text Analyzer tool could do the hard job for you.
Receiving an image hyperlink (when a text link with search phrase is possible)
Sometimes when web masters rush to get backlinks, they miss minor details, such as anchor text. Yes, an image hyperlink is great and it could even bring you more visitors than a text website link (if the image is attractive, of course and users click it) but for Attorney seo purposes nothing beats a key phrase in the anchor text.
Not using ALT text if image website link is the only possibility
Image website links might be the worse option than text website links but if an image hyperlink is the only possibility to get a in-pointing link, don’t reject it. However, make sure that the ALT text of the image hyperlink has your keywords and phrases – this is more than nothing.
Obtaining backlinks to your site from irrelevant websites
Now, this mistake is really a popular one! When hunting for links pointing to your site, you should concentrate on relevant internet sites only. If you have a law site, acquiring website links from a food one is not worthwhile. It is true which it is not easy to find relevant web sites to get links from but unless your site is in a very narrow niche, chances are which there are hundreds or even thousands of relevant internet sites you may get a inbound link from.
Finding backlinks from sites/pages with tons of links
A inbound link is more beneficial, if it comes from a page, which is not cluttered with tons of other inbound links. A lot of pages have 300, or more website links and if your link is one of them, this isn’t a fantastic achievement. On the other hand, numerous directories put the “nofollow” attribute on nonpaid links, so actually even if there are 300 hyperlinks on page and most of them are “nofollow” (but yours isn’t), this still counts.
Hyperlinks from pages spiders can’t crawl
A link might look perfectly legitimate (i.e. keywords and phrases in the anchor-text and no “nofollow” attribute) and still it might not be a hyperlink. This is especially an issue with website link exchanges because you put a link to the other website but the other site doesn’t do the same for you. Website links Search engines can’t index could be placed on dynamic pages or simply on pages, which are not indexed by Search engines because robots.txt bans it. Which is why it doesn’t hurt to check from time if the pages your links are placed on are accessible to spiders.
Openly selling hyperlinks
There is hardly a web marketer who hasn’t heard which paid hyperlinks can hurt your rankings but still several webmasters don’t miss the chance to make a few dollars. If you really want to sell website links, you’d better use the specialized hyperlink selling services, such as Backlinks.com because they are more discreet. However, have in mind which while some of the paid hyperlinks networks try to hide the fact that the website links are paid, the rest are not that discreet. Also, maybe the worst gaffe you could make is to include phrases in website like “Buy 5 PR hyperlinks for $10”or any other hint which you are selling hyperlinks. You could include “Advertisements!” or similar messages and still sell paid links but this is not as explicit as listing your prices for hyperlinks.
Back linking to internet sites with poor standing
Connecting to websites with bad standing, also known as “bad neighbors” is one of the worst mistakes you could make. When you hyperlink to such internet sites, for Google, Yahoo, and Bing this means that you endorse them and this results in penalties for you. Which is why you must absolutely always assess the web sites (and their standing) first before you website link to them. Even if you are offered a lot of money to website link to a website with poor standing, you’d better decline the offer because otherwise your rating with search engines will suffer and this will cause you a lot of problems.
Back linking to good websites gone bad
Even if you assess carefully the internet sites you link to, sometimes it happens that a site, which used to be more or less decent all of a sudden starts publishing objectionable content. That is why it doesn’t hurt if you verify not only that the outbound links you have are not broken but also where they lead to.

If you are a local firm how important is it that your links be from local businesses?
Hi Ronn,
Getting links from local businesses is a great place start. However, you shouldn’t limit yourself to local businesses only. Perhaps even more important from a local search perspective are business citations. These are places across the web that list your business name, address, phone number, website, etc. I recommend checking out Getlisted.org for more information on local search.
What strategies do you recommend for a law firm to build so-called “organic” links? We recently started publishing pleadings and other court papers on our criminal defense website to attract traffic and, hopefully, natural links. The traffic has definitely increased (significantly), but the linkages have been slow to follow. What else can be done if the goal is to avoid paying for attorney links such as Martindale Hubbard and the like?
Great question! A post comment doesn’t it lend itself very well to providing a detailed organic link building strategy. Nonetheless, here are some things to think about.
First, acquiring truly organic links requires understanding your audiences. Who are they? What are they looking for online? What is their demand for information?
Second, you have to provide “content” that supplies that demand. A lot times lawyer authors and publishers think too highly of their own content in terms of delivering to their audiences. Good content is hard, great content is rare.
Third, you have to market your content. In other words, get it in front of people who are ready, willing and able to link to, share and further publicize it.
If you’re a criminal defense lawyer in Jacksonville, FL, start identifying the people and sites that are most relevant and authoritative on your subject matter. Who are the reporters that cover your local area? Are there city, county, and state organizations, non-profits, etc that are publishing on their websites/blogs? If so, start building relationships with these folks. Follow them on social networking platforms. Provide insightful comments on their articles and posts. Offer to contribute to their sites.
Think about what motivates you to link to another site. Then, do that.
Thanks for the comment and question. Hope this was at least somewhat helpful.
