Very informative interview of Google’s Matt Cutts by Stone Temple Consulting’s Eric Enge. Included in this interview was a discussion of indexation caps, host load, and how google crawls a website:
“There is also not a hard limit on our crawl. The best way to think about it is that the number of pages that we crawl is roughly proportional to your PageRank. So if you have a lot of incoming links on your root page, we’ll definitely crawl that. Then your root page may link to other pages, and those will get PageRank and we’ll crawl those as well. As you get deeper and deeper in your site, however, PageRank tends to decline.”
-Matt Cutts
While these are topics that may include some more advanced technical components of how your law firm website is crawled, they also need to be considered when your laying out the basic structure of your site. Understanding how PageRank flows throughout your site will have a significant impact on how many individual pages of your site are indexed, and subsequently, how many different searches your website is ranked.
Without getting too technical, It’s very important that your content is “crawlable” from your home page. If your law firm website is built on WordPress, there are many easy to implement tweaks that will encourage googlebot to crawl your site more deeply resulting in more of your pages in the index.
One of my favorite articles on WordPress tweaks is Yoast’s WordPress SEO Guide. These are some of the best quick tips for helping your WordPress installation perform better in Google.
If you’re considering getting a new law firm website or blog up online, you really need to take a good look at WordPress.
