Google Voice: Your email, SMS and transcribed voicemails in one inbox .

Google has started to release its preview of Google Voice, “an application that helps you better manage your voice communications.”

If you are/were a GrandCentral user, you’re in luck.  Google Voice will be available initially to existing users of GrandCentral.  If you’re not a GrandCentral user, sign-up here for the public release.

The new application improves the way you use your phone. You can get transcripts of your voicemail and archive and search all of the SMS text messages you send and receive. You can also use the service to make low-priced international calls and easily access Goog-411 directory assistance.

The concept is “one phone number for all your phones, for life.”

The service will be free. Users can purchase credit (much like Skype) to make international calls.

Google Voice will accept text messages and forward them on to your mobile phone. You can respond to those messages as well. Google is using the existing Gateway technology (which is used by Google Chat) to power this feature.

Google also added voicemail transcription which is searchable.

Google has added new settings that allow users to route calls from specific people straight to voicemail, or your mobile phone, etc, instead of having to state their name and then be forwarded accordingly.

The interface for Google Voice is your phone via an audio menu. There is also a website available to administer your account.

Lawyers, imagine having all your email, SMS and transcribed voicemails in one inbox . You will also be able to respond to text messages from the interface and initiate phone calls, which then calls your designated phone and then the recipient.

Obviously, you will have to update their phone number with all their contacts.
